Speeding Towards Tax Reform
November 3, 2025Hi! I’m Tyler, the newest member to the Indurante team. I started in January 2025, a time in my life where everything was changing. I was married the summer before, and my husband had just started pilot school in December. While he was learning to fly, I was figuring out how to land a new career. After ten years of working in retail, I was ready to make a change. He mentioned an open position at Indurante & Associates, Inc. so I applied and got the job. I was going into it blind. I knew Excel and how to analyze retail data, but the world of railcar taxes was unchartered territory for me. Let me tell you, there is A LOT that gets done over the year.
January through March is spent collecting fleet and mileage data from our clients. We receive all types of reports, and it takes some time to enter the information into our database. April and May are used to create and submit forms that need to be filed in 29 states, Washington DC, Texas counties, and Umatilla tribe. And yes, every state has its own due date. We know first-hand that managing the due dates of multiple states can get overwhelming. Indurante takes on that responsibility, so you will not have to worry about a thing.
Once filings are accepted, states issue assessments that start to roll in during the summer. We compare these with our data, and if discrepancies appear, we file protests or corrections to ensure the client only pays for what they owe.
Tax bills start arriving at the end of September. We review them and track down missing ones. If you have sent anything in the mail, you know that things can get lost. This is especially important in Tennessee, Washington, Oregon, Florida, Colorado, and Idaho, who will send individual tax bills from each county rather than one bill for the entire state. From there, we either forward the bills or pay them on behalf of our clients. Whoever decided that most of the taxes are due at the end of the year is crazy, that’s when the fun holidays start. They must have had a loco motive (Okay, maybe too on the nose, but I had to get at least one joke in there!). Then before you know it, January is here and everything starts all over!
I have learned so much over the last 11 months, and am incredibly grateful to have Don, Noelle, Kristen, Mark, Emma, and Katy here in my corner. If you have talked to any of them, you know that they make complicated things easy to understand and that they truly know the railcar industry. This is just the beginning of my career, and I am excited to continue to learn from the best in the industry.
