The Human Mind vs. Artificial Intelligence: A Conference Reflection

September 1, 2026

For most families, September means backpacks, school supplies, and getting back into a routine. For many companies, it means closing out the fiscal year. But for Indurante, September kicks off something much bigger: Payment Season. The largest number of states bill in the fourth quarter; the buckets of mail will start rolling in. By the end of the year, we anticipate processing more than 10,200 tax bills — including 8,600 county tax bills and 1,600 state bills — and issuing more than 4,000 checks and e-payments.

For 20 years, I’ve sorted through buckets of mail, been covered in paper debris from opened envelopes, and received paper cuts while stuffing checks into envelopes. I have learned the intricacies and oddities of reviewing each state and county bill. I’ve trained employees and clients in the best practices for issuing the various payments.

And I love every minute of it. I love the volume of the work and the dopamine rush that comes when we complete a due date. I’m proud of our company’s ability to pivot between paper checks and online payments, and of the trust our clients have shown us in handling their tax liabilities. Taxing jurisdictions appreciate our company for sending timely individual payments with the stubs, since most bank bill pay services do not.

As AI evolves and expands our ability to automate and create efficiencies, tax billing will likely be slow to change. Only 11 states and less than 40% of counties and cities currently offer the ability to pay bills online. State bureaucracies will continue to be limited in their ability to incorporate new technologies until their budgets allow room to grow. Until then, buckets of mail will continue to arrive each year, and Indurante will carefully review and pay every bill.
